The Boondocker AI Assistant lets you ask questions about recreational vehicles, camping gear, maintenance, travel, and any related topic. It draws on a massive knowledge base of manuals, spec sheets, and specialized articles, as well as the web, to give you accurate, sourced answers.
An active member account is required to use the assistant. When you create an account, usage credits are offered as a welcome gift.
A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section is available at the bottom of this page.
Asking a question
Type your question in the text box at the bottom of the interface, then press Send or hit Enter. The assistant begins drafting its response in real time—a status indicator and timer appear while it generates it.
For a more targeted answer, include the relevant details in your question. Examples:
- “How do I winterize my RV’s water system?”
- “Manual for the Magnum Energy ME2512 inverter/charger”
- “Which lithium battery is compatible with a Victron Blue Smart 30A charger?”
The more specific you are up front, the fewer credits you’ll use. That said, you can always add details in a follow-up question.
Sources and citations
Every answer comes with a Sources panel (click the bar to open or close it). This table lists the documents consulted to produce the answer:
- Type — indicates whether the source is a PDF document, an HTML page, or a web result.
- Title — click the link to open the original source.
- Source — the manufacturer or originating domain.
- Relevance — a match score between the source and your question (1 to 5 stars).
If the available documents don’t contain enough information, the assistant can run a supplementary web search—web sources are then clearly identified in the table.
Feedback on answers
A thumbs up 👍 or thumbs down 👎 appears in the Sources panel of every response.
- Thumbs up — flags the response as helpful. It’s logged silently.
- Thumbs down — flags an issue. You’ll be asked to confirm; if you’d like to leave a comment, you’ll be redirected to the report form.
A Report an Issue button is also available at all times in the bottom right of the interface, independent of per-message feedback. Please use it to report any general issues with the assistant.
Conversation history
All your conversations are saved automatically and accessible in the side panel on the left of the interface. Click any conversation to view it.
- Recent conversations (under 24 hours) — you can keep asking questions and receive new answers.
- Older conversations (over 24 hours)—available read-only for reference. To ask new questions on the same topic, start a new conversation.
You can rename a conversation by clicking Change title at the top right of the conversation area. Otherwise, the title is automatically generated from your first message.
To delete a conversation, use the Delete Conversation button in the main area or the corresponding option in the side panel. Deletion is permanent and immediate.
Other useful buttons
- Copy All — copies the entire conversation to your clipboard.
- Copy Last Answer — copies only the most recently generated answer.
Limitations to keep in mind
- The assistant answers based on the documents available in its database. If a manual or spec sheet hasn’t been indexed yet, it might lack that information.
- Responses are generated by artificial intelligence and may contain inaccuracies. Always consult official manufacturer documentation for safety procedures. The assistant can provide most manuals directly.
- The assistant is not a substitute for a certified technician for diagnostics or repairs.
Settings
- Translate citations: check this box to have the assistant translate source titles and excerpts into your language. Note that this option slightly increases the credit cost.
- Width and height: adjusts the interface width (as a percentage) and height (in pixels). The setting is saved automatically for your next visits.
- Contrast +: increases the visual contrast of the display.
- Dark mode: switches the display to a dark theme.
- Subscribe to the newsletter: We occasionally send news to subscribers when something’s worth mentioning. That’s the only use we make of this information. Your personal information is fully protected — see our privacy policy for details.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What are usage credits?
Usage credits measure how much the AI assistant is used. Each question you ask consumes a certain number of credits, depending on the complexity of the request and the length of the generated answer.
You’re given credits when you sign up so you can try out the service. You can check your credit balance at any time on the AI assistant page. Credits don’t represent a block of time — they represent a quantity of computing resources used to generate the assistant’s answers.
How do I buy usage credits?
Several credit “packages” are available on the purchase page at https://theboondocker.com/buy-ai-credits.
Do credits expire?
No. Credits never expire.
Why work with credits when some general-purpose AI platforms offer monthly or annual plans?
Because a specialized RV and camping assistant serves occasional, seasonal needs: lots of questions in spring when you’re getting ready for the season, a few along the way in summer, and almost none in winter when the RV is asleep under the snow. Paying for a year-round subscription for usage concentrated in a few weeks is difficult to justify — a $25/month plan comes to $300 a year, whether you ask one question or a hundred. With credits, you only pay for what you use, and more importantly, they never expire: credits bought before one trip are still there for the next one, even a season later.
You might think of taking just one month of a subscription in spring, then cancelling it. But RV needs don’t fall into such tidy boxes: a big departure in June, a mechanical hiccup in July, a fall project in August—each time you’d have to restart and pay for a full month again. With credits, you simply pick up where you left off, without ever paying twice to fill the gaps. In short: a subscription bills you twelve months a year; credits, you buy once, and they’re waiting for you.
Does the assistant speak French?
Yes, the assistant is bilingual and can answer in both English and French. It adapts to whichever language you ask your question in.
Are my conversations private?
Your exchanges are only visible to you and the Boondocker team, as part of improving the tool. Other users don’t have access to your conversations with the AI assistant unless you choose to share the content yourself. Please refer to our privacy policy for more details.
Never share sensitive personal information with any AI assistant.
Can the assistant be wrong?
Like any AI tool, the assistant can occasionally give an inaccurate or incomplete answer. We recommend always double-checking critical information, especially anything related to safety (electrical, propane, towing). That said, our assistant won’t make up or hallucinate an answer — it will simply tell you it can’t find one. That’s actually a fundamental difference from general-purpose AI assistants, which tend to invent answers when they can’t find one.
You’re welcome to flag any incorrect or incomplete answer.
Is it free?
When you create an account, you receive a certain number of credits for free. When those credits are used up, you’ll have to purchase more. Credit pricing varies depending on how many you buy, thanks to volume discounts.
So no, it’s not free — but it isn’t expensive either.
What kind of questions can I ask?
Pretty much anything related to RVs and camping: maintenance, repairs, electrical systems, plumbing, choosing equipment, camp cooking, destinations, and more. If the assistant can’t find the answer in its knowledge base, it will search the web.
Does the assistant have access to my RV or my account?
No, the assistant has no access to any personal data. It answers solely from its knowledge base and the web.
Is there a limit to how many questions I can ask?
You can ask as many questions as you have credits in your account.
The longer a conversation gets, the more credits an identical answer will use. That’s because the conversation’s context has to be constantly re-analyzed. So if you’re done discussing a given topic and have other questions, start a new conversation.
Can the assistant just chat?
Yes, as long as it stays within the world of RVs and camping. That said, you might ask a question related to the topic and have the assistant tell you it’s out of context if it doesn’t realize the question applies to that domain. For example:
Question: How long does it take a fridge to cool down once it’s powered on?
The assistant might think you mean a fridge at home and tell you that’s out of context. If that happens:
- Correct the context by explaining you’re talking about an RV fridge.
- Mention the RV in the question right from the start (though it’s easy to forget).
Does the Boondocker pay fees to use the AI models?
Yes, there are fees. Your credit purchases help cover those costs.
